The Queen's Circle

Lady Rae is the highest ranking mambo of The Queen’s Circle, a group representing the interests of the Voodoo community in New Orleans. The group reveres the spirit of Marie Laveau as its patron. They believe it was Laveau’s power from beyond the grave that spared New Orleans a direct hit from a bomb, and that she further protected the city when she possessed the body of Lady Rae’s grandmother in order to drive the Bokors out of the area.

The Queen’s Circle is comprised of the priests of the voodoo community. Only “good” priests, not those that practice the dark arts, are allowed to have a representative in the Circle. For the most part, The Queen’s Circle is a self-policing organization that provides its members with education, training, and discipline when needed. It also seeks to tend to the poor and performs charity as much as possible.

The Queen’s Circle recognizes the authority of Baron Samedi as the will of the people, but that doesn’t mean they like it. The Circle has a somewhat passive-aggressive attitude toward Samedi and his Court. They consider it an insult that Samedi adopts the persona of a revered Loa. In public, Lady Rae refuses to refer to him by that name, instead calling him “Herman.” It is one of the few things that gets under the Baron’s skin, though whether it is the fact that she dare call him by his real name, or that she somehow found out his real name in the first place, is unknown. Nobody else in the city dare do such, and the fact that she does so as often as she does is testament to the power she has.
